Healthy Wetlands, Thriving Mangroves, Resilient Communities.

TANZANIA

Mangroves are recognized as a cornerstone of Mafia Island’s ecosystems and local livelihoods—protecting coastlines, sustaining fisheries, and supporting community wellbeing. WATONET, a marine conservation NGO based in Mafia Island, in partnership with Blue Ventures Conservation (BV) and in collaboration with the Tanzania Forest Service (TFS), Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP), Mafia District Council, community members, and other key stakeholders, will lead a targeted mangrove restoration initiative across two priority sites. The initiative aims to restore degraded mangrove habitats, strengthen coastal resilience to climate impacts, and enhance fish nursery grounds that underpin local fisheries. Commemoration of World Wetlands day on the 2nd of February will as well earmark the launch and awareness raising for mangrove restoration, scheduled on 10 -11th March. Through community-led restoration, awareness raising, and coordinated institutional support, the event will contribute to healthier wetlands, thriving mangrove ecosystems, and more resilient coastal communities in Mafia Island.
